Alex Pereira shuts down retirement rumours after Twitter hack

Pereira speaks out

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira has denied posting a tweet that suggested he was considering retirement. The 37-year-old Brazilian said his Twitter account was hacked after a message appeared on Wednesday implying he was disillusioned with the UFC and thinking of walking away from the sport.

The now-deleted tweet read that Pereira was “disheartened” and had “thoughts of not fighting any more,” sparking several hours of speculation about his future. But later that day, he addressed the situation in a short Instagram video — speaking in Portuguese — and made it clear that the statement didn’t come from him.

“I didn’t even know about it”

“I’ve received a ton of messages, from everyone, who saw a post on my Twitter,” Pereira said. “I didn’t even know about it. I was hacked. It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything — you guys see that. But I was hacked and I’ll sort it out.”

“I don’t even know what’s going on. I have a great relationship with the UFC. People like to do bad things. That’s that.”

Rematch with Ankalaev still in talks

Pereira’s last appearance was in March, when he lost the UFC light heavyweight title to Magomed Ankalaev. A rematch between the two is reportedly in the works, though nothing has been officially announced. Pereira remains one of the UFC’s biggest names, and the suggestion that he might retire — even briefly — was enough to stir fans and pundits alike.

For now, it seems the champ isn’t going anywhere.
