Magomed Ankalaev throws down a challenge but who’s stepping up?

Magomed Ankalaev isn’t waiting around. After defending his UFC light heavyweight title with clinical precision, the Dagestani powerhouse is actively calling for his next opponent, and not everyone’s lining up to answer.

With Pereira and Prochazka out, the division hesitates

Since dominating Alex Pereira at UFC 313, Ankalaev has made it clear he’s ready for whoever’s next. But two of the division’s top names aren’t in the conversation, at least not right now. Pereira is reportedly taking time off to recover from a minor injury, while Jiri Prochazka, surprisingly, is focusing on finishing his university studies before returning to the cage.

This leaves the light heavyweight landscape wide open. And Ankalaev isn’t hiding his impatience.

Jailton Almeida: a heavyweight looking to shake things up

In a surprising twist, it’s not a 205er who’s answered the call. It’s Jailton Almeida, currently ranked in the top 10 at heavyweight. The Brazilian has publicly expressed interest in dropping down a weight class to challenge Ankalaev, a move that could set up one of the most unexpected title fights in recent UFC history.

“If no one at light heavyweight wants it, I’ll take it,” Almeida said via social media. “I’ve fought at 205 before. I’m not afraid of anyone.”

Almeida’s speed and grappling-heavy style could pose a unique challenge to Ankalaev’s composed, counter-striking approach. But dropping to light heavyweight after competing at nearly 240 pounds is a tall order in every sense.

A champion stuck in limbo for now

Ankalaev has been one of the most dominant and underrated champions in the UFC today. But with the top contenders either unavailable or unmotivated, the division feels like it’s hitting a pause button. Unless someone from within steps up soon, we could see cross-division matchups become the new normal.

In the meantime, the champ is waiting. Not quietly. Not politely. But waiting all the same.
